There are many boarding schools in the UK and you may be wondering which one you should choose. You are not alone; many other students and parents find themselves in your position. At the Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies we believe in making sure that people make informed decisions. That is why we have taken some time to tell you what you should take into account when you are choosing a boarding school in the UK. Narrow down your boarding school choices by looking at the following:
• Do you want to go to a co-educational school or do you want a single sex school? This is important because boarding school students are teenagers and they may be distracted by the opposite sex. If you feel that you can handle that then there is no reason why you shouldn’t go to a co-ed boarding school. On the other hand, life is co-ed and therefore you may want to start dealing with that fact early.
• How many pupils are full boarders? There are two types of boarding schools in the UK. The first is full boarding where students are in school throughout the term. The other is weekly boarding where students get to go home on the weekends. Schools that have full boarding tend to have more activities for their pupils than those that offer weekly boarding.
• How much is school fees? This is important because boarding school education in the UK is not cheap. You want to choose a school that you can afford. It is advisable to look at your finances for the entire boarding school duration. You may have money to finance it now but will you still be able to pay school fees 2 or 3 years from now? Factor in all costs – uniform, trips, course books, examinations, music lessons and so on.
• Are you looking for anything specific? Boarding schools in the UK have different offerings. When choosing think about whether you want a school, for instance, that has specific offers. Are you looking for a boarding school that is big on sports, for instance? Do you want a school that is highly academic or do you want something that is more flexible? When you are thinking about this consider your specific talents and abilities.
• Do you want to go to school in town or do you prefer a rural setting? Both have advantages and disadvantages. A rural setting is quieter and students are able to study better. An urban setting may mean that students have more exposure.
• Will the school look after you properly? The level of care in UK boarding schools differs. Although most have a very good pastoral care there are those that don’t. Choose a school that is registered with the Independent Schools Council and the Boarding School’s Association as these two institutions inspect all aspects of boarding schools in the UK.
• Lastly, look at the tradition of the schools that you have in mind. There are some schools in the UK that believe in keeping things informal – all teachers and staff are referred to by first names only. Others are the completely opposite.
Now you know what to consider when choosing a boarding school in the UK. We hope you make the right decision!
